An activist in Muncie, IN who refers to himself as “Inmate #1776″ began what he calls a “Hunger Strike for Journalistic Integrity” on Monday, May 13th. He states that although the hunger strike has been taking place in Guantanamo Bay (Gitmo) since February, the American media has not done enough to inform the public.
Inmate #1776 believes that the lack of significant coverage by American mainstream media regarding the hunger strike has negatively affected the reaction of the American public. He hopes to influence the 10 major newspapers in Indiana to run a front page story on the continued mistreatment of the prisoners at Gitmo in wake of the hunger strike. He believes that once Americans know more about Gitmo they will put significant pressure on their government to close Guantanamo Bay or at least allow those prisoners fair treatment and the right to trial.
Those newspapers Inmate #1776 would like to run articles are:
Indianapolis Star
NWI Times
Evansville Courier & Press
Star Press
South Bend Tribune
