Dear Samir,
Today I’m participating in the rolling fast in support of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay and have spent the day reading the history of the reality there, mainly from Witness against Torture, but also from the Center for Constitutional Rights and Veterans for Peace.
During my reading I came across your op-ed, “Gitmo Is Killing Me,” and am quite moved by your testimony. I’m also aware that my going without food for 24 hours in no way compares to your experience.
I’ve contacted President Obama, my congresspeople (Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner and representative Morgan Griffith), the Southern Command, the Defense Department, and have signed the petition (possibly more than once, unfortunately).
Thousands of people have responded to the requests for solidarity with all the prisoners. It’s criminal that you have been imprisoned so long, subjected to torture and harassment, and haven’t been released.
It’s not the first time I’ve felt shame for the country I happened to be born in. Please know that you are in our hearts and are not forgotten.
Sincerely,
Cinny Poppen
